NZ Hydrological Society Travel Grant
PURPOSE
The travel grant is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the understanding and
management of New Zealand’s water resources
- assist members to travel to enhance their hydrological skills and experience.
The travel grant will ordinarily be given for the following travel purposes:
- assist recent graduates (up to two years after degree has been conferred)
to attend a NZ Hydrological Society Conference to present a paper of which
they are the primary author where financial assistance is not available elsewhere
- assist members to travel overseas to enhance their hydrological skills
and experience
- assist members to travel within New Zealand to enhance their hydrological
skills and experience where financial assistance is not available elsewhere.
The travel grant is not an alternative or supplementary source of funding
for employers.
Grants will not be given retrospectively.
GRANT CONDITIONS
- The grant will be given to members to carry out hydrological research,
visit an institution, attend a conference or similar event, or in some other
way extend their skills and experience in hydrology. Preference will be given
to applicants who intend to carry out active research or make a specific
contribution such as participate in a workshop.
- The recipient will be financial member of the NZ Hydrological Society with
at least two full years standing.
- The amount requested may not exceed 50% of the total travel costs, excluding
salary costs.
- The Society’s executive may invite advice from appropriate people
to help assess applications.
- Up to four Grants may be awarded in any 12-month period, at the Executive’s
discretion.
THE RECIPIENT WILL PROVIDE:
- A brief report on the outcomes resulting from the grant for publication
either in the Journal of Hydrology (New Zealand) or in the Society’s
newsletter (Current) within 3 months of completion of travel, or
- submit a scientific paper on the work to the Journal of Hydrology (New
Zealand) within 12 months of completion of travel, or
- present a relevant paper at the Society’s annual symposium within
12 months of travel.
Recent graduates receiving the grant in order to attend a NZ Hydrological
Society Symposium will be deemed to have fulfilled this requirement on presentation
of their paper.

NZ Hydrological Society Award for Outstanding Achievement
PURPOSE
The Award For Outstanding Achievement is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the under-standing and management
of New Zealand's water resources
- recognise outstanding achievement in hydrological
science in New Zealand.
THE AWARD
The Award will be a suitably inscribed medal to be presented at the Society's Annual
Symposium.
CONDITIONS
- The Award will recognise outstanding contributions to hydrological science
in New Zealand, as demonstrated by scientific publications, and/or a person's
impact on the management of New Zealand's water resources.
- The recipient will be a financial member of the N Z Hydrological Society.
- The recipient will normally be a resident of New Zealand.
Nominations will be judged by a selection panel nominated by the Society's
Executive. The panel may obtain statements from the nominee's referees, and may seek
additional comments from appropriately qualified persons. If in the Executive's
judgement no nominations achieve the expected standard, the Award may not be
made in a given year.

Award for Achievement in Operational Hydrology
PURPOSE
The Award for Achievement in Operational Hydrology is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the under-standing and management
of New Zealand's water resources
- recognise outstanding achievement in operational hydrology in New Zealand.
THE AWARD
The Award will be a suitably inscribed medal to be presented at the Society's Annual
Symposium.
CONDITIONS
The Award will recognise significant contributions to operational hydrology
(the acquisition, transmission, processing, archiving and application of data
related to the quantity and quality of water in all parts of the hydrological
cycle) in New Zealand, as demonstrated by:
- introduction or development of technology that significantly has enhanced
operational hydrology, and/or
- a person's impact on the contribution of operational hydrology to the science
of hydrology and its application to the understanding and management of New
Zealand's water resources
- the recipient will normally be resident in New Zealand.

Grant in Aid of Travel
PURPOSE
The Grant-in-Aid is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the under-standing and
management of New Zealand's water resources, and
- encourage full-time NZ tertiary students to attend the Society's Annual Symposium
and present papers describing their work.
THE GRANT
The Grant will be $100. The sum may be increased at the discretion of the
Executive if circumstances warrant.
CONDITIONS
- The recipient will be a student enrolled at a New Zealand tertiary
institution.
- The recipient will attend the Society's Annual Symposium, and present a
paper or poster describing the hydrological work in which he/she has been
the principal investigator, or a principal participant.
- The recipient will be a financial member of the New Zealand Hydrological
Society.
Applications will be assessed by the Society's Executive who may invite
advice from appropriately qualified people. Up to three Grants will be awarded
annually, at the Executive's discretion.

Young Scientist Award
PURPOSE
The Young Scientist Award is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the under-standing and
management of New Zealand's water resources,
- recognise the contributions of young hydrologists to hydrological science
in New Zealand, and
- encourage publications of high quality work through the medium of the Society's
Journal of Hydrology (New Zealand).
THE AWARD
The Award of $250 will be presented at the Society's Annual Symposium.
CONDITIONS
The Award will be made annually for the most significant contribution to hydrological
science in New Zealand which:
- has been completed during the 12 months to 30 June in the year of nomination,
is the first substantial contribution by the recipient to hydrological science
(i.e., the recipient has not previously had work published in a scientific
journal),
has been carried out in New Zealand, and
has been published in, or accepted for publication in, the Journal of Hydrology
(New Zealand).
- The recipient will be a financial member of the N Z Hydrological Society.
- The recipient will normally be under the age of 30 years at 30 June in
the year of nomination.
- Applications will be assessed by the Society's Executive who may invite
advice from appropriately qualified people. If in the Executive's judgement
no nominations achieve the expected standard, the Award may not be made in
a given year.

Grant in Aid of Research
PURPOSE
The Grant-in-Aid of Research is to:
- promote the principal objective of the Society to further the development
of the science of hydrology and its application to the under-standing and
management of New Zealand's water resources, and
- assist full-time tertiary students to carry out hydrological research.
THE GRANT
The Grant will be up to $400 for the purchase of necessary equipment and materials.
CONDITIONS
- The recipient will supply a report to the Society's newsletter Current,
and submit a paper for publication in the Journal of Hydrology (New Zealand)
which describes the work undertaken.
- The recipient will be a financial member of the New Zealand Hydrological
Society.
- The recipient will normally be a full time student at a New Zealand tertiary
institution.
- Applications will be assessed by the Society's Executive who may invite
advice from appropriately qualified people. Up to two Grants will be awarded
annually, at the Executive's discretion.
- Items purchased with the Grant will become the property of the recipient's
institution.
- Proof of purchase of the items must be supplied prior to reimbursement.
APPLICATIONS
Applications may be made to the Secretary, using this form, preferably by
31 May in the year in which the Grant is required. Applications may be judged
competitively.
