UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Changing Times for Operational Hydrologists

`
A New Zealand Hydrological Society Workshop
Novotel Hotel, Rotorua, Tuesday, 17th May 2011
Purpose
The workshop will be a forum to exchange ideas and information about developments in New
Zealand field hydrology. We want to give the multiple stakeholders involved in operational hydrology
an opportunity to share their views and visions of the future of the industry in New Zealand.
Programme
The programme will be organized into several sessions. We start the day with general “open”
sessions and invite submissions. Later we focus on “strategic” (or discussion) sessions which will be
organized by a keynote presentation and a workshop discussion.
Proposed programme follows, final programme will be circulated prior to the day.
Introduction (5 min)
Session 1 Case Studies of Interesting Projects (4 x 15 min)
We invite presentations on projects which provide interest through the use of special equipment, the
location in which the work is carried out, how the data has been used etc. Contact
martin.doyle@tasman.govt.nz
(Morning Tea)
Session 2 Advances in instrumentation, software and telemetry (4 x 15 min)
We invite presentations on this topic, giving preference to talks that introduce something that is not
yet widely known about. Contact martin.doyle@tasman.govt.nz
Session 3 General discussion on Health and Safety (30 min)
Keynote Talk: Health and Safety Issues in Operational Hydrology
Be prepared to contribute, some suggested topics follow:
• Changes in legislation
• Case studies – recent things that have gone wrong (or right)
• Site safety and structures
• New training initiatives
(lunch)
Session 4 National Qualification for Environmental Monitoring (30 mins)
KeynoteTalk: Current Developments in Establishing a National Qualification (Mike Ede)
Discussion: Questions and discussion with members of Steering Committee
`
Session 5 Strategic session: Implications of new technology (80 min)
Keynote Talk: Overview of new developments in instrumentation
Workshop: Split into four strands to consider and report back implications such as stationarity of
data, timeliness to obtain useful information, cost, operational practise etc,
Strand 1: Changes to water level instrumentation
Strand 2: Changes in the way flow is measured
Strand 3: Changes to recording interval
Strand 4: Changes to rainfall instrumentation
(afternoon tea)
Session 6: Strategic Session: The thirst for data – more, better, and now, please! (80 min)
Keynote Talk: Overview of new developments in sensor-to-service data delivery
Workshop: Split into 4 strands to independently consider issues such as:
• What will real time data collection look like in 10 years?
• How will information be communicated to the public?
• Site management to ensure audit trail and information quality:
° Better automatic checks to improve the integrity of real time information?
° Can we use electronic logbooks to adjust data in real time from the field?
Venue and cost
The workshop will be at the Novotel Hotel, Rotorua. There will be a charge of $80 to cover the
venue and catering. Invoice to be issued on the day. At present, the room has a limit of 60 people, so
it will be first in, first served.

General information on workshops

In addition to the following workshops, the Annual Symposia also have a number of workshops.

PAST WORKSHOPS

Meeting the Challenges of Water Allocation: Learning from each other

October 5-6, 2009, Wellington Convention Centre, Wellington

This workshop gave practitioners of water allocation in New Zealand a chance to learn techniques and tools for effective water allocation in different regions with presentations from keynote speakers andregional representatives, and breakout sessions to discuss key issues such as: alternatives to the first in first served system; defining seasonal quotas for active management of water resources; recognition of security of supply in changing climate and setting limits with incomplete information.

Environmental Monitoring in Urban Areas

The New Zealand Hydrological Society held a one day workshop in Auckland on Tuesday 5th May 2009.  The day was spent in the field looking at the issues, techniques and technologies related to monitoring urban flows and contaminants, with visits to NIWA and Regional Council sites around central Auckland.  The visits and discussion were targeted at people with an interest in technical hydrology or water quality monitoring.

General information

Apart from at the Annual Symposium, the NZHS generally runs 2 workshops a year, often in association with other groups or organisations. Workshops are a great way of sharing knowledge and discussing current hydrological issues outside the NZHS annual symposium. Topics have included coastal aquifer management, hydrology and wetlands, hydrological archives, etc.

NZHS workshops are organised when members identify a need for a forum. The need could include general dissemination of information, the discussion of topical issues and/or the need to find solutions to hydrology-related problems. Financial support is available (subject to Executive approval) to NZHS members who require assistance to develop and/or run a workshop.

If you wish to suggest a topic, run a workshop, or need more information, please contact:
Tim Davie (tim.davie@ecan.govt.nz) or
Society administration.
