The role

Horizons Environmental Data is seeking an Environmental Data Technician for the Northern Monitoring unit. This role is focused towards the successful delivery of Horizons Environmental Data monitoring activities, within the unique and challenging catchments of the central North Island. The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental monitoring or related technical fields.


The Environmental Data Technician will assist the team’s Environmental Data Coordinators and Senior Environmental Data Technicians to undertake the acquisition and verification of a range of environmental data parameters. The Environmental Data Technician will be required to operate in accordance to the Environmental Data Team's ISO9001:2015 Quality Management System and assist with construction, maintenance, electronics, telecommunications, and data management of the allocated network.


The environmental data acquisition activities are determined by the needs of the Regional Monitoring Strategy, engineering design and operation, regional planning, research, the operational needs of the emergency response, compliance and river management areas of council as well as the requirements of external customers.

The role requires will need to be self-motivated and capable of taking ownership of completing your work efficiently and to a high standard.

The Environmental Data Technician role is an intermediary position that resides between an entry level Assistant or Graduate Environmental Technician role and that of a Senior Environmental Data Technician. The successful applicant will be supported through New Zealand Diploma in Hydrology (Level 5) and their professional development.
