He angitūtanga: The opportunity

If you are passionate about Auckland’s environment and are looking to further your scientific and field monitoring skills, we could have the role for you!  This is a great opportunity for those who would like to pursue a unique career in environmental monitoring, reporting and analysis, and have experience working with environmental databases or GIS.


We are looking for new team members in the following areas:


  • Hydrology – experience, skills and knowledge in designing, managing and monitoring a hydrological network and associated equipment. Knowledge of using time series data management.

  • Water Quality – experience, skills and knowledge in environmental monitoring. An understanding of the principles of environmental data collection and processing methods is preferred.


Based in Auckland CBD, but working across the Auckland region, as an Environmental Specialist you will help deliver the core environmental monitoring programmes in Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU). On any given day your responsibilities will include collecting high-quality monitoring data, managing operational logistics, supporting data collection and processing across a range of programmes and contributing to continuous improvement of our processes.


RIMU is responsible for monitoring and reporting on Auckland’s environment. We collect, process, analyse and evaluate a wide range of environmental data across the marine, freshwater, land and air domains to provide high-quality evidence and information to decision makers and Aucklanders to assist with policy development, strategy implementation and programme evaluation.


He kōrero mōu: About you

With a degree or equivalent qualification in environmental science, or a diploma in NZ Field Hydrology, your work experience includes environmental monitoring, processing and evaluating data, managing technical projects and undertaking report writing.


In addition to having excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll also enjoy working with a team and coming up with innovative solutions to deploy environmental monitoring equipment and to manage complex databases.  Having a passion for the outdoors and upholding an excellent health and safety attitude are critical.


An understanding of New Zealand’s regulatory framework and local government processes would be desirable as would any experience with policy effectiveness monitoring and evaluation.
