Senior Groundwater Modeller

Te tūnga | The role

We have a newly created, permanent full-time (40 hours per week) position for a highly motivated and team-focused researcher to join our Groundwater team, as a Senior Groundwater Modeller, based at our Christchurch Science Centre.

In this role, using your groundwater modelling skills you’ll be undertaking world leading research in the areas of groundwater modelling, and groundwater quality and contamination. You will be working with a team of hydrogeologists, hydrogeochemists, microbiologists, field and lab technicians to analyse, interpret, and quantify the movement of nutrients and pathogens in the groundwater environment.

You will be expected to write major client reports, publish in peer reviewed scientific journals, present work via oral presentations at conferences, and contribute to or lead funding proposals. You’ll have the opportunity to coach and mentor junior staff within the team and to interact with a wide range of external stakeholders (including central and local government, environmental practitioners and consultancies, local and international science organisations).

The ESR Groundwater team is recognised as being at the forefront of its field, internationally and nationally. We maintain several field sites for field experiments and world class laboratories. This is an opportunity to work with a passionate team, who carry out world-class groundwater research and consultancy projects, addressing issues associated with groundwater quality and safety.

To be successful in this role, you may have a mix of the following:

· A relevant postgraduate tertiary qualification in groundwater modelling, or closely related engineering or scientific field.

· Experience in groundwater modelling research.

· Technical expertise in open-source groundwater modelling software, and tools.

· Experience in model parameter and predictive uncertainty analysis.

· Experience with programming languages, developing code in Python, Fortran or similar, for linking models, and processing input data and model outputs.

· Experience in constructing groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport models, using novel approaches which may require the development of new techniques.

· A willingness to work as a member of a team, supportive of other team members and focused on achieving team objectives.

A PhD qualification, GIS skills, consultancy experience, hydrogeochemical modelling experience and a savvy business acumen to identify research projects with commercial potential would be highly desirable, but not essential.
