He angitūtanga: The opportunity
We have a great opportunity for students with an interest in hydrology and environmental monitoring to join our Hydrology team for a 12-week period over the summer (from November 2024).
Based in the Auckland City Centre, but working across the Auckland region, you’ll be working for 40 hours per week on field and office-based tasks. You will spend most of your week in the field (3-4 days) supporting the delivery of hydrology monitoring programmes collecting data on rainfall, river water level/flow, lake water level, groundwater level, and continuous water quality. The work involves hands-on use of a wide range of monitoring equipment, tools, and electronics. Office-based tasks such as organising equipment maintenance and assisting with data management will also be key components of your work.
During the placement there will also be the opportunity to see how other environmental programmes undertaken by the Water Quality team and the Air, Land and Biodiversity team are conducted.

You have a collaborative approach but are able to undertake tasks independently and proactively where required. You have a passion for the outdoors and are comfortable working outside in all weather conditions, sometimes for long days, with an excellent attitude towards health and safety.
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must:
be enrolled in a degree for environmental/biological/natural science or similar. Preference will be given to students completing their BSc and intending to progress to a PGDipSci, BSc (Hons) or MSc.
hold a clean, full New Zealand driver’s license and be prepared to drive utes.
A current first aid certificate, day skippers and/or water safety qualification would be beneficial, but are not essential.
