Job Description


Mō te tūnga | About the role


You will assist with the collection of a wide range of environmental data, including river levels and flows, surface water quality and meteorological information by maintaining our network of automated monitoring sites and undertaking physical surveys and measurements. You will have the capacity to use a wide range of skills to undertake site operation and maintenance, troubleshoot issues with sensitive monitoring and communication equipment, and quality assure the data you collect using specialist software.


This role sits within the Science & Technology team and you will receive support from the Environmental Data Team Leader and the wider Environment Quality department.

Mōu | About you


This role requires a varied skillset. You will need to be a practical problem solver, as comfortable around a toolbox as you are a computer, exceptional attention to detail and strong computer literacy.


To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:


  • An ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Have an ability to swim and be physically fit

  • An ability to safely work in or around water

  • An eye for detail and the patience to support evolving environmental datasets

  • To be comfortable working alone and as a part of a team

  • To know your way around a toolbox and be able to ‘build a fence’ as comfortably as you can use your computer and software skills

  • A logical mind-set to support fault finding

  • An understanding of environmental processes and pressures

  • To be an ambassador for the data you collect by following strict guidelines promoting quality


The skills and personal attributes we look for are:


  • Demonstrable understanding or experience in undertaking environmental data collection activities

  • An understanding of the use of environmental data

  • Ability and flexibility to self-manage a wide degree of job tasks while balancing the needs of a wider team


While a tertiary qualification in a relevant scientific/engineering field is desirable, those with practical experience in electronics/instrumentation or a trade qualification are more than welcome to apply. Willingness to learn and upskill is key to success in this role.
